Homemade Christmas Gifts and Decorations for Under $10

!±8± Homemade Christmas Gifts and Decorations for Under

1. Berry Votive Holder-Dress up any plain glass votive holder with berries on wire at any Michael's craft store and wind around the holder. Once the circle is formed use some fine craft wire or picture hanging wire from any dollar store and tie the ends together. My favorite colors are gold, silver, burgundy wine, or red. For a fun flair use cream or baby blue. Use these in your own home or wrap them up as a set of four or six in a pretty box with a gorgeous bow for a great gift. The exact same items double as napkin holders too!

2. Festive Napkin Holders-Use plain wooden napkin holders and paint them any color such as red, gold, silver, or white and embellish them with a small bell, snowflake, beads, or simply another paint color with pattern of snowflake, polka dots, stripes etc.

3. Funky Centerpiece-Fill an inexpensive glass vase (tall cylindrical work best) with all sizes of the same color glass ornaments balls. I like red, green, gold, silver, or blue. Use one color but multiple designs such as stripes, swirls, frosted, shiny etc. With a large enough bowl this can make a great centerpiece. Try hot and spicy red for your dinner table. You can purchase inexpensive balls at dollar stores, discount stores like Ross, Walmart or Target or try the Salvation Army.

4. Traditional Wreath- Use a pre-made artificial greenery wreath, then buy 2 colors of berries on a wire. I used Gold with cream and Burgundy wine this year. Wrap the long end of the wire at the bottom of the berries around the round wire holding the wreath together. Do this for each set. Alternate colors so that it will go color one, color two, color one. The two colors will come to a point so the top of the wreath has wine color on one side and gold/cream on the other with the meeting point as the very top and bottom. Fluff the greenery so that the berries don't look like they're just floating on top. Once completed add a ribbon in the same colors you chose for the berries at the bottom. Wrap ribbon about 5 times at the bottom centre with centre of long piece of ribbon in middle. Eventually tie a large bow. The key is to find inexpensive ribbon that is a bout 3" wide and leave 2 long tails at the bottom of the bow that hang about 8" long. Mount to front door or above fireplace etc.

5. Create Cool Coasters- Use circular cut Plexiglas from Home Depot or Craft store about 3" wide in diameter and use festive holiday fabric to have cut same size. Use spray adhesive to attach the fabric to the Plexiglas. You can use wrapping paper or wallpaper also. Create these for yourself or give a set of four or six away. As a gift, remember they don't have to have a Christmas theme on them, use floral, contemporary stripes or even a photo.

6. Christmas Art Frame- Use pre-made frames that are fun and fit at least a 4"x6" picture for holiday words such as JOY, LOVE or PEACE. Use pretty wrapping paper or fonts from your computer printed out to slide behind the glass. Silver and Gold frames are my favorite for the season. Feel free to use barn board, wood, plastic, whatever you have around the house. These are cute décor gifts for friends and family also.

7. Mini Snow-covered tree- Collect a bunch of twigs long enough to pop out of a decent size vase. Use decoupage glue and white tissue paper to create a neat effect for the vase or leave as clear filled with glass ornaments or whatever you like. Spray paint the twigs white and use fishing wire to dangle tiny ornaments and vintage jewelry for fun effect. Use on a table, at an entry way, or in a bedroom. Feel free to add some basic white indoor lights for a nice evening glow.

8. Monogrammed Towels- To stay in the budget, buy some great basic kitchen towels with a simple stripe at the bottom in red, blue, green or even black. Use a lettered script stencil and some fabric paint to paint their surname initial on the towel. Feel free to make up a set of two with different colors if you can find the kitchen towels at a super discounted price.

9. Holiday Centerpiece- One of the simplest centerpieces is a glass vase filled with water and real cranberries (not frozen, not dried) and a white floating candle. Use an interesting vase with a large opening or a great glass dish. Either way the cranberries and candle will float and look wonderful. Ensure to use a non-scented candle if this will go on your dining table. We wouldn't want the scent to interfere with the wonderful aroma of your home-cooked meal.

10. Home-Made Snow Globe- Use old jam jars to create a winter snow globe. You'll need water, the jam jar, glitter of your choice, epoxy glue, ribbon and a small figurine or a few for the inside. Use the epoxy glue and secure the figurine(s) to the lid on the inside. Then pour some glitter or plastic mini snowflakes inside the jar. Now add distilled water without bacteria and close the jar tightly. Lastly add some ribbon around the bottom of the globe (the lid) to hide it and you are done. Again, gift or your own décor...you decide.

11. Holiday Dishware- Places such as Ikea and discount stores can provide for a set of 4 bowls and plates that you can paint up with glass paint. Be sure if you are going to eat off of them that the paint is used for that. You can use white ceramic or glass bowls and dishes. For the glass set, use glass etching cream and a stencil for a great effect. Wrap up the set and away you go.

12. Primp those Pillows-Take your existing pillows and make them holiday ready with some simple organza. Take square or rectangular pillows and wrap the sheet of organza around the back until the ties meet the front. Now make a bow. The idea here is to use colors that work. So, if you have red pillows, use some gold organza. If you have plain white pillows, use red or gold etc. If you are handy with the sewing machine you can make some simple square slipcovers for your existing ones so you can change them back when the holiday is over. Using an old knit sweater is another fun cover for them. A neat idea for slip covers is velvet. Use an iron and a stamper. Take the backside of the fabric and place the iron there. On the good side of the velvet is where you'll press the stamper into. After you are done the pattern will be revealed either as one large centered detail or several small ones all over. Use this for chair covers too!

Primitive Country Furniture and Decor

!±8± Primitive Country Furniture and Decor

Primitive country furniture brings a harmonious balance into your home with the rest of your decor. These hand-crafted, rustic, and pre-aged furnishings provide warm and welcome comfort to your family and your visitors. For decades the cabin decor, Adirondack, and mountain lodge styles have been known as the least imposing and most comfortable styles available to the country decorator. Primitive country furniture will blend nicely with other similar decorating styles such as the ones listed above and even Arts and Crafts, Mission Movement, French Country and Craftsman furniture. Now, through the incomparable woodworkers of the Amish communities, you too can recreate the surroundings of the great outdoors in your own country home. Your furniture will be understated with simple classic lines.

Cloth and paint colors are neutral or in early Americana colors. The primitive furniture and pillows will be cozy and overstuffed. In the old days, many primitive country furnishings were made from twigs, branches and other natural elements - so look for earthy colors and uneven tones. Primitive country furniture series has tables, chairs, desks, armoires, nightstands, dressers, benches, beds, and thick wood coffee tables. You'll find them painted, raw, aged, or in artisan hand crafted, old fashioned, traditional designs. The primary feature of this style country furniture is the use of materials from reused pieces, barns, and posts. Planks are old, or fashioned to appear vintage or antique. Some primitive furniture has been created and decorated with bark, branches and twigs. Each log and twig is especially chosen for their shape and texture - right down to the decorative trim. The chunky wood styles of primitive country furniture lend themselves easily to armoires, wardrobes and big tables. Big chests and trunks also double as an innovative coffee table or bench for the foot of the bed.

In the double drawer wardrobe you'll find much more than a closet. Plain oval dining tables with benches make excellent primitive country dining sets. The wooden wall cupboards, wardrobes, plate racks, and hutches give your dining room a comfortable, country style. Or, place a rectangular work table in your kitchen, and use antique kitchenware for your cooking and serving - this brings back memories of an old farm house, doesn't it? Use traditional lighting and chandeliers for a truer experience - with those roughly finished cupboards and racks nearby the kitchen experience will be rustic, homey, warm. There are many different ways obtain primitive country furniture, and they aren't all expensive! Buying used furniture and roughing it up to age it, or overstuffing and recovering larger pieces are two easy and inexpensive alternatives.

This repurposing of existing furniture is also good for the environment. Just because your existing piece of furniture isn't working for you today, doesn't mean that it can't be changed to work for you in the future. For instance, a friend of mine was given an ugly outdated, veneer covered entertainment unit. It was large and just what she needed for her dining room to display her plate collection and cookbooks. We spent 1/2 a day sanding, painting and aging the piece and today everyone asks where they can get primitive country pieces just like hers! Country decor is possible with all the rooms of your house. You can decorate your home wholly or partially in the country style.

So take a look at your existing furniture with a creative eye and consider some of the ways below to changing it to suit your style: Paint, then sand and stain. You won't believe how different a piece of furniture can look once sanded, painted and stained. You can even change the style of the piece. A cheap wooden Ikea table turned into a beautifl primitive country coffee table (years after use) with a thick application of crackle paint and whitewash finish. Outdated dressers can also change. Change the hardware. A few vintage, restoration or antique handles, hinges or pulls can turn a piece of wood furniture into a rustic masterpiece. Similar to painting, staining and sanding, old glass balls or brass handles add primitive to any previously country furnishing. One of my favorites is to re-upholster or re-cover a sofa, chair, loveseat or footstool. Thick primitive fabric is now easier to come by than ever before (or just look for muslin) to update a piece of furniture.

If you don't think you have the skill to re-upholster a piece, shop around for some country slipcovers - instant change. Buy antique or vintage pieces. Besides being environmentally friendly, those deals fit right into primitive country decor. Rather than spending 00 and more on a new couch or dining set, why not shop around for something similar, but gently used? Primitive country furniture is available at affordable prices and will lend that welcome air to any room of your home. Country decor reduces the modern air to most homes and apartments - enhancing the peaceful and authentic nature of your home and your family members.

How To Identify A Good Quality Sofa

!±8± How To Identify A Good Quality Sofa

THE FRAME

The best frames are solid, densely grained, knot-free hardwood (such as rock maple, oak, poplar, alder, ash, birch), which has been kiln-dried, a process which removes the moisture to help prevent warping, twisting, and cracking.

THE SPRINGS

The gold standard of sofa foundations has hand-tied springs. What this means is that a series of heavy-gauge metal coil springs is set into the seat of the sofa frame and tied into place by hand using waxed twine in a series of interlocking knots.

THE CUSHIONS

"The real secret to a sofa's comfort is not the springs, it's the cushions. the cushions must be fluffed up after each sitting to maintain their shape and appearance's series of springs, like a small Marshall unit, is encased inside a "box" of high-density foam.

THE UPHOLSTERY

The fabric upholstery on a sofa often represents a significant proportion of its price, which is why it's not worth putting an expensive fabric on an inferior frame (the average sofa requires 15 to 18 yards of fabric). The choice of fabric or leather can greatly influence cost, durability, and even how soft the cushions feel (depending on the fabric's breath ability) as well as, of course, appearance.

Corner or sectional or L shape sofa

A sectional sofa, with its multiple pieces and angles, can take up a lot of space but create many seating options for your family and friends. Contemporary sectional sofas are designed for the whole family in mind, with multiple pieces built to fit together for the most versatile use of space.

Garden white sofa in fabric

A fabric sofa is elegant, comfortable and practical. the fabric sofas are robust and made to stand the test of time (with wooden structure and seats in non-deformable fabric on a frame of steel springs), as well as being completely loose covered, to allow for easy cleaning. There are also many different types of sofas in all different fabrics from normal upholstered to the fine Italian leather.

Rattan sofa

rattan sofa is becoming popular and popular. it can last a lifetime with minimal care. Like fabric sofas, there are many different grades of leather. Premium leather sofas have premium price tags to match. Leather sofas are very easy to care for with occasional vacuuming and a wipe with a damp cloth. Twice a year your leather sofa should be treated with saddle soap.

Contemporary and traditional sofa

Sofa sets, a significant furniture piece, serve as beautiful enrichment to the interiors. They are designed in traditionally or contemporary Indian styles that are truly eye-catching. Intricately carved sofa sets are a major hit among the admirers of exquisite furniture and are a craze in the overseas export market.

Traditional and contemporary sofa are often adorned with fabrics or leather in elegant prints and finishes with solid wood legs. Being rare and luxurious, the silver stools are true old fashioned and real taste of noble & high status buyers. The sofa sets are perfect for the living rooms, family rooms or offices.

The sofa sets are available in both contemporary and traditional styles lending a touch of beauty and character to the homes. They are elegantly adorned with intricate carvings and patterns that blend in totally with functionality. The sofa sets are padded with cushions made of different fabric, designed to offer immense comfort while sitting. They are available in a huge range of styles and finish supplemented by appropriate smoothing and polishing.

Washable fabric sofa

There are many sofas in a variety of fabrics, including leather which is easy to clean. Choose a fabric that is going to be functional for the people using the sofa, and keep in mind many sofas come with slip covers that can be removed for washing.

Change Your House to Keep Your Dog

!±8± Change Your House to Keep Your Dog

If allergies from dog hair and dander are a problem for you, be sure that you do all that you can do to your home to eliminate these allergens before ever considering getting rid of your furry friend. In many cases, allergists and immunologists are quick to tell you to get rid of the dog. This does not have to be the solution to ending your allergies. Our pets are like family members, so taking the advice of getting rid of them without trying everything you possibly can is just not an option for most of us.

One of the biggest places that hold pet hair and dander is wall to wall carpeting. Consider having a professional floor care specialist come in and remove the old carpet for you, and replace it with one of the many hardwood and laminate flooring choices that are available. Be sure to be in another room or outside of the home when they pull up the old carpet, as the dander and dust will most definitely be stirred up into the air for a while. Consider running an air purifier during the replacement of your floors. Use one that is designed to remove 99% of dust and dander from the air.

If you have blinds on your windows, it would be best to purchase replacement window coverings, such as cotton fabric roll up blinds that are washable. Wash them often. Any areas of the home that must be carpeted should be vacuumed often, preferably with a vacuum cleaner that has a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA). This type of filter removes 99% or more of the allergens in your carpet without stirring them up into the air. Consider replacing cloth furniture with leather furniture, or purchasing furniture that has a wood frame and less fabric.

Couches and sofas that have removable slipcovers, such as the line of furniture sold at IKEA are ideal, as the slipcovers can be removed and washed often. Small HEPA filter containing air purifiers can be added to each room, especially bedrooms for the allergy-sufferer to significantly reduce allergens and help them breathe easier during the night. HEPA Filters should be used in the Air Conditioning Unit in your home and should be changed every 30 to 60 days at minimum in the home of someone who suffers from dog dander and hair allergies. Not changing them will result in an increase in allergy symptoms and decrease in air flow in your home due to buildup.

Be sure that your dog is groomed often to keep the hair shedding down. Talk to your veterinarian about the best diet for your pet to keep his skin and coat healthy, as this will reduce the amount of dander the dog will produce. Bathe your dog often and if the weather is nice, and the dog is willing, let him be outdoors more than indoors. A nice outside dog house in a shaded area would likely be something your dog will enjoy. Check on him often. Never isolate your dog in one single room of the house or make him feel like he must avoid someone all of the time. Your dog can feel as if he is being rejected or that he is being punished.

Padded Benches Storage - The New Way To Store

!±8± Padded Benches Storage - The New Way To Store

The Padded Storage Benches that are available at Simply Benches are the perfect benches that you can tuck any unwanted things away that lie around. They are a great place to not only store items but also to sit down and relax on. Simply Benches has a good selection to offer. Each one has a unique look to fit any décor in your home. Perhaps you want to place a padded storage bench in your bedroom to store extra pillows or quilts in. There will be a design to fit your room.

Many benches, not only padded storage benches are used throughout the homes all around the world. They are great places to store extra item in the home that otherwise would just be in the way. Some benches are turned into coffee tables and magazines, photo albums, or maybe CDs, or movies are stored inside out of sight, but still close at hand. In the bedroom, many benches are placed at the foot of the bed and used to sit on while changing clothes or to store extra pillows and blankets that are not being used at the time.

Padded storage benches are much like storage chests, except they come in various sizes and designs. Some have drawers along with the top opening up. Others have the look of drawers so it looks more like a table or dresser than a bench. Some take on the look of a bench with a back and side arms, while the seat lifts up to hide what is inside. Some have the look of doors on the side while others do have doors on the side, making it easier to get to things inside of it.

Padded storage benches come in various types of woods and finishes, all depending on the choice you have made for your particular room. When you are deciding on a bench to fit your needs in a particular room, no matter whether it is in the living room or bedroom, you should choose something that you can live with for a long time to come. Choosing the design and style can be easy if you know exactly what you are looking for. If you are unsure of how it will look in your room, you can compare it with the types of items your room already holds. If your room has dark wood furniture already in it, then your best choice may be to go with a dark wood padded storage bench and vice versa if it has light or medium wood already in it.

If you are planning to place your padded storage bench in a room that is rarely used and only using it for storage, you should still try to find something that fits your tastes. You may one day end up wanting to use a bench as a coffee table in your living room and you wouldn't want the center attraction in your room to be offbeat with who you are and what you like would you? No matter why you are purchasing a padded storage bench, you should always decide before you do your shopping, what exactly you are wanting. This will make it much easier in the long run for you to easily find what you are looking for and could save you money too.

Decorating on a Shoestring Budget

!±8± Decorating on a Shoestring Budget

Right now one of the most popular shows on television is, âTrading Spaces.â If you havenât gotten an opportunity to watch this show, the object of the game is to decorate one room in someone elseâs house with a budget of a ,000. The decoratorâs truly struggle to accomplish this so you know it is hard when even they, trained professionals, are having problems creating the room of the homeownerâs dreams.

Do not despair just because your money is limited- you can still create a warm and inviting home frugally. When people come into our home and see our front room (the only room we have decorated since we are relatively new homeowners) they always comment on how beautiful our drapes, furniture, and whole look of this room is. Do you think I disclose that we put the furniture together ourselves and that the whole décor came compliments of Target? No way! Never divulge the sordid details, just simply bask in the glory and let them try to recreate your look. Here are a few tips for creating an inviting home on a budget.

· Watch television shows, read books, and look through magazines to gather inspiration for creating a stylish home. Although many of the things you look at are completely out of your budget, you can try to recreate it with lower costing materials and a little creativity. Some great looks can be found on http://www.potterybarn.com, http://www.pierone.com , http://www.ikea.com, and http://www.marthastewart.com.

· Paint is the cheapest way to really change a room. One thing I have learned is to never be afraid of color- bright colors can really liven up a room. Be wary though with small rooms because this can make the rooms look smaller and closed off. In smaller rooms use softer and lighter colors- yellows, light green, lavenders, and white/off-white.

· Getting your home organized will make your house look well-kept. To find out some great ways to get your home as well as yourself organized, go to http://www.organizedhome.com . This site is wonderful for learning how and what you need to do to clear out the rubbish in your home. With different styles of baskets to organize your items it not only makes the room look cleaner, but it also adds to the décor.

· Target, Kmart, and Walmart all offer great items for your home at a much lower cost. Target has fantastic drapes, tableware, towels, pillows, and furniture for your home. Kmart offers incredible linens, drapes, and sheets from the Martha Stewart line. Walmart offers great fabrics for those do-it-yourself projects in making pillows, drapes, and linens.

· To add pictures to your walls, look through old art books or photograph books. Buy a cheap frame to put it in and you will have beautiful artwork for a fraction of the cost.

· Rearrange your furniture in your home. Try to find new ways to break up a room or to make the room more open and inviting.

· Light a candle and put potpourri in a bowl. This really warms up a room, not to mention adding a beautiful smell to the air.

· Find slipcovers for your couches. Doing this is a lot cheaper then buying a new sofa and when you get tired of it you can take the covers off. These are especially nice if you have little children because it is a great way to preserve the quality of your furniture. The slipcovers are easier to clean because you can throw them in the wash, unlike your couch. A couple of great places to look for nice slipcovers are http://www.kohls.com and http://www.surefit.com.

· Want something in particular in your home, but canât afford it? Hit http://www.ebay.com and bid on it. Ebay always has great things for your house not to mention beautiful antiques and collectibles which make your home more unique.

· Buy large pillows to use as extra seating. These are great for when you have a large group over and not enough seating. Donât invest in more seating; just buy big beautiful pillows for your guests to sit on.

· Go to the garage sales, but go early. Those who wait do not get the deals that the early risers get. Donât underestimate the Salvation Army and Goodwill either because you can find some interesting and beautiful things for your house.

· Learn one craft that will aid you in decorating your home. Several of the fabric and craft stores offer wonderful classes for learning crafts such as sewing and floral for a very low cost. By learning crafts you can make things yourself at a lower cost or you may be able to make money off of this to afford you more luxuries in your home- you just never know.

· Hit your local Dollar Tree for some great buys on things to make your home more inviting. You might laugh at this one, but you would be surprised what ends up at that store. I have bought beautiful mugs, baskets, and stationary for a buck a piece and no one knows that I spent so little money. Try to think outside the box and go to the stores that are normally not known for quality houseware. This is where you get the real deals.

· Purchase all different types of blankets and put them under your end tables or drape one on your sofa. They make your guests feel cozy and invited especially on those cold winter nights.

· Put a book or two on your coffee table that can be a conversation piece, but don't overdo it. People tend to get carried away with this and then you lose the beauty of the furniture underneath. One or two books are nice, but four or five looks like clutter.

· If you buy the do-it-yourself furniture or have a piece that looks like it needs a face-lift try replacing the knobs on those cabinets and drawers. A beautiful brushed silver knob or ornate gold knob can make the item look entirely different.

· Replace your old plastic curtain rods with sterling silver or gold rods. Target and Kmart have some really beautiful ones with different styles of ends (leaves, fruit, glass) that really add that special touch.

· Try a theme room, but donât get carried away. Remember that whatever theme you chose you will have to live with it for a long time. Go for classic themes that seem to withstand the ages. If you choose to pick a theme for the room do hints of it throughout rooms, but donât make the entire room one big theme. Just give your guestâs hints of it.

I hope these tips will offer you some insight on decorating your own home. My advice to you is that you start small and with one room at a time. Do not get carried away with redoing your whole home or you will feel overwhelmed. Concentrate your efforts on one project until you are completely satisfied and then begin thinking about another project.
